Incrimination Inspiration

"The instruments of torture" by Michael Kerrigan is a collection of a variety of past and present torture methods and devices. Some of the instruments used on the victims of torture are masks; I have used the illustrations of these torture masks to contribute toward my primary research.

These images are taken from "Masks. The Art of Expression" edited by John Mack, I have selected several images from these book; which depicts masks from around the world, informing my primary research.

Distressing myself

Using several of the primary images I took, where I had distorted my face using a range of media, e.g. cellotape. I further distorted the images by printing out the photographs and working in to them.

For the image below, I used two different images of a close up of my face, being distorted in two different ways and cut vertical lines up both images. I then arranged the images alternatively so the two images become inter-linked; I then joined the images together using cellotape.

For my next image, I used a marker pen to draw over the defining line on my face; but only the ones that were exposed under the cellotape. I then used cellotape to cover the cellotaped areas shown in the photograph. Not drawing the facial lines under the cellotape and adding further cellotape to the photograph, the face underneath almost becomes lost and appears repressed.

Originally, this image was a photograph of myself with string tied around my face. I cut out the areas of my face on the photograph that were covered in string and stuck in to a piece of black card.

Before I begin to write my own magazine article; I first completed some competitor analysis, to help decide how I wanted to create my article. I looked at AnOther magazine and noted the various factors that help create the magazine, e.g. the layout, tone, amount of text, etc.

I first began by looking at the basics: who the editor was, where the magazine was published, how much it cost, before investigating the style of AnOther further.

I found that AnOther is mostly a visual magazine, with predominately editorial photo shoots; with only a small amount of text, especially considering the size of the magazine. It has a very clean cut look; the edges are sharp and the photography is all high fashion, there wasn't any high street brands evident through out. Some of these brands include: D&G, Balmain, Celine, JW Anderson and Burberry. These editorial images proved to be very striking and captured my attention through out. Although, I noticed that the models within the magazine were mostly Caucasian; the looks of these models were diverse.

Although, AnOther is obviously an established brand, due to the vast amount of big designer names, advertising their labels within: I feel that the target market is for a younger audience. I feel that the age group this magazine is targeted at would be between the ages of 21-30. However, due to the (what I would consider to be) the steep price of £6.95; I believe that the magazine is aimed towards young, city-based professionals within this age group, who would find this price more affordable. I feel this due to the content which is mostly visual; I also believe that the cover of the magazine would grab the attention of this younger audience, rather than an older age group, due to the vibrant colours, fun setting and young, beautiful woman placed on the cover.

I feel that the over all theme of AnOther magazine is editorial but quirky; although personally, I couldn't afford to regularly purchase this magazine, being a young student; I would recommend it to those who could.

Let's face it

Junior Fritz Jacquet

Jacquet's work is quite astounding. He using a simple everyday item: the cardboard tube from inside a toilet roll to create these interesting characters. I have pictured his work below, along with four of my own attempts at creating these mini masks (I think I need more practice! lol). I think in art, it is important to work with what we already have and try to re-create it into something better, it is not always necessary to always try and create something new; I think this is portrayed within Jacquet's work.

To create these characters: first, immerse the cardboard roll into water for about 3 seconds and then pinch the wet roll to form characteristics e.g. eyebrows, mouths etc. Then dry the roll, so these formations set into place and then paint the faces however you wish!
